Château Jaumard 2009 Bordeaux Rouge

Château Jaumard 2009 Bordeaux Rouge

Château Jaumard 2009 Bordeaux Rouge

A red as good as this one shows why French wine remains still so widely popular and survives the obvious competition from the New World. Even at this modest price, the winemakers at Chateau Jaumard have aptly demonstrated the Old World's flare for subtler versions of the mainstream varietals. This is a fine example of what we mean: a red of charm and character, medium-bodied, soft and round with some wonderful herbal character coming through.

Julie Walker’s grandfather was scrupulous in his site selection when establishing his beloved seventeen hectares of vineyard over seventy years ago; the vineyards have a mix of gravel and limestone identical to those in the heart of St-Emilion. In the winery, grapes are de-stemmed, after which it all gets very traditional – the grapes are left to macerate on their skins for twenty days prior to pressing and fermentation in stainless steel. Each vineyard parcel is treated separately and post-fermentation the wines spend a short time in neutral oak vats. The final cuvée is assembled prior to bottling and the wines are ready for release one year after harvest.

Sunday Express Best Wines Under £10 - Jamie Goode

This is a juicy and bright with supple cherry and plum fruit. A stylish and very digestible wine with classic balance, it's Bordeaux (claret to us Brits) at a remarkably good price. Don't miss out!
